Shrewd Mammal

you could not make this up…

But evidently someone did…

I was alerted to this by The Devils Kitchen, an interesting blog and not for the faint hearted or those easily offended.

An article in the Daily Mail that quite honestly, beggars belief. Well ok, it doesn’t given the state of our country know but really, this is so amazing as to be off the scale. Proof as if proof were needed that we have sunk to new depths…

Motorists could face £20 spot fines if they leave their engines running while stuck in traffic.

Traffic wardens will be able to issue the penalties  –  after a warning  –  in a bid to cut down on pollution.

A pilot scheme is due to be launched in January in Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, and will be expanded if it proves successful. West Sussex Council said it would target areas where exhaust emissions build up unnecessarily, such as rail crossings and town centres.

Now one of the “many” questions that this brings up is how will they judge it a success? I would wager that the success would be measured by revenue gained from fines…prove me wrong I dare you!

Who gives the council the right to tell motorists when to switch their engine on or off? What about the extra fuel used by starting the car again? What about the accidents caused by people desperate to start their car and get through the lights…my oh my this is some poorly thought out, control freakery of the highest order.

The Department for Transport said it had issued guidance to councils stressing that they should not issue a £20 penalty notice without first giving drivers a warning.

Rule 123 of the Highway Code says: ‘If the vehicle is stationary and likely to remain so for more than a couple of minutes, you should switch off the engine to reduce emissions and oil pollution.

‘However, it is permissible to leave the engine running if the vehicle is stationary in traffic.’

Well, that’s clear then….

I am (once again) rendered speechless by this legislative tom-foolery of the highest (and by that I mean lowest) order. You WILL see this coming to a town near you because the revenue income will be enormous.

Disgusted and yet somehow not surprised really.
